I learned a long time ago the wisest thing I could do is be on my own side, be an advocate for myself and others like me. ~Maya Angelou
What Is A Medical Advocacy Consultant?
At Vital Ability, a Medical Advocacy Consultant helps individuals, caregivers, families, and support networks by providing supportive, educational, and systems-aware guidance as they navigate complex healthcare, wellness, disability, rehabilitation, advocacy, or life-transition challenges.
This role is designed to help clients strengthen self-advocacy skills, identify appropriate providers or resources aligned with their unique needs, improve communication strategies, organize healthcare-related concerns, and better understand available options within healthcare and support systems. Medical Advocacy Consultants help clients explore barriers, identify possible solutions, locate educational resources, and feel more informed, prepared, empowered, and supported throughout the process.
The Consultant’s role focuses heavily on communication support, collaborative problem-solving, organization, education, systems navigation, resource awareness, and helping clients prepare for meaningful conversations with healthcare providers and support professionals. While clients remain responsible for making their own healthcare and personal decisions, the consultant works to help individuals feel more confident, informed, organized, and equipped to participate actively in their care and advocacy efforts.
Medical advocacy consultants may assist clients and caregivers by:
• Helping identify questions, concerns, priorities, and documentation to prepare for appointments
• Assisting clients in locating educational resources, providers, community supports, or advocacy-related information
• Supporting clients in strengthening organization, communication, self-management, and self-advocacy skills
• Helping clients better understand healthcare systems, terminology, resources, and available support options
• Encouraging informed decision-making and collaborative communication strategies
• Identifying client values, priorities, goals, and belief systems that may influence healthcare or wellness choices
• Assisting clients in organizing information, records, forms, timelines, or questions related to care coordination or healthcare discussions
• Supporting caregivers and families in navigating healthcare-related stressors, transitions, and communication challenges
A Medical Advocacy Consultant may also conduct educational research, gather publicly available information, identify potential resources, and organize information into understandable summaries intended to support awareness, preparedness, and informed discussion.
Is My Consultant A Clinical Provider?
No. A Medical Advocacy Consultant is NOT a licensed clinical healthcare provider. While the Consultant’s goal is to support client empowerment, communication, education, advocacy, and overall well-being, they do not diagnose medical conditions, prescribe medications, perform medical procedures, provide therapy, offer legal advice, or replace licensed healthcare professionals.
Medical Advocacy Consulting services provided through Vital Ability are educational, supportive, advocacy-oriented, and empowerment-focused in nature and should not be interpreted as medical, mental health, legal, or clinical advice. Clients are encouraged to consult appropriately licensed professionals regarding medical, legal, mental health, or emergency concerns.
Provider Roles of Clinical Providers (not available here
Medical Doctor (MD, DO, or other Licensed Physician) – A medical doctor is a licensed healthcare professional trained and authorized to diagnose, treat, manage, and help maintain physical and mental health conditions. Doctors evaluate symptoms, interpret diagnostic testing, prescribe medications, provide medical advice, perform medical procedures or surgeries within their scope of practice, and oversee patient treatment plans and ongoing healthcare management. Physicians work directly with patients and caregivers to assess conditions, develop treatment recommendations, monitor progress, and coordinate clinical care.
Medical Case Manager – A Medical Case Manager is typically a licensed healthcare or social service professional who helps coordinate patient care, assess healthcare needs, assist with discharge planning, connect patients with services, monitor progress, and help manage complex healthcare situations. Medical Case Managers often work collaboratively with healthcare providers, hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, insurance companies, social service agencies, and community organizations to help support continuity of care and healthcare coordination. Registered nurses, licensed social workers, and other qualified healthcare professionals commonly serve in these roles across clinical, rehabilitation, outpatient, inpatient, home healthcare, and community-based settings.
The Medical Advocacy Consultant does not manage the health of patients, nor do they have patients. Medical advocacy consultants are not necessarily licensed healthcare providers (though some may have prior medical experience that assists them in locating additional resources). They provide tools and strategies for the client or caregiver to complement their relationship with their providers; strategies to self-advocate for their own general health or that of the client being cared for; and support for the client’s goals for self-advocacy while respecting their human dignity and confidentiality.
